Winter Park Resort to host Cross Country Level 100 & 200 Coach Certification

United States Ski & Snowboard has designed a coaching certification program to prepare Nordic coaches to effectively develop beginning athletes in the sport of cross country skiing. The goal of USSS is to get the entire ski coach profession to recognize the training techniques at the National Team level, and to coordinate efforts on best practices and directives. According to Bruce Manske, Winter Park Competition Center Nordic Program Director, “We want coaches to be aware of what’s going on nationally, and to develop some similar language in terms of what skiers are learning all around the country.”

The Winter Park Competition Center will host the Cross Country Level 100 and Level 200 Coaching Certification Practicum at the Winter Park Resort on October 14th and 15 2023. During the on-snow or rollerski clinic, coaches will review the fundamental technical and tactical aspects of ski coaching and be assessed on their ability to teach, demonstrate, and analyze several fundamental skiing skills. Upon successful completion of the on-snow or rollerskiing assessment, coaches will complete a course survey and obtain their Level 100 or Level 200 Coach Certificate.

The L100 Certification will be a requirement of the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Coach Membership starting with the 2022-23 season. The certification includes an online module with exam, as well as an in-person practicum with a USSS Coach Developers, who will lead the practicums. At this time, Manske is the only Cross Country Coach Developer in Colorado. “In my experience,” said Manske, “the L100 practicums have been great, coaches learn from each other, as well as being guided by experienced Coach Developers.”
